Can Dory be mounted outdoors – in rain or low temperatures?
Absolutely! Dory is IP44 certified and sustain rain, snow and extreme temperatures. If the temperature is below 0°C you may need to take the sign inside and warm up for some minutes before updating the display.
Can I upload my own images?
Yes! You can upload any photos or images, either as full screen backgrounds (now) or as part of a template (coming summer 2025).
Is Dory a sustainable product?
Yes. Dory uses ultra-low-power E Ink and consumes no energy between updates. It’s built to last for decades, with replaceable batteries lasting up to 15 years and minimal waste. We’re also working to become climate positive by offsetting twice the estimated CO₂ emissions from production and shipping.
Where is Dory made?
Dory is based in Oslo, Norway, where both the product and app are designed and developed. The first batches will be assembled at our headquarters, but production will later move to Asia. The display units are sourced from E Ink, a company based in the USA and Taiwan.
Are there any similar products out there?
Not that we know of. E Ink, the originator and world leader in this field, has even featured Dory as a new and exciting use of e-paper technology. While there are some signage solutions for professional use, our experience shows that they tend to be more complicated, lack focus on aesthetics, personalization, and content, are not weatherproof, and are significantly more expensive - both to purchase and to use.
Does the app cost anything?
The app is available in two versions: The basic free version with everything you need to use the sign – including a set of quality fonts and some ilustrations. We believe many of you will be more than happy with this version. In addition we offer an affordably priced premium version (EUR 1.5) which features a larger and growing library of fonts, illustrations from renown illustrators around the word, custom functionality (TBA) as well as a special offers.
Is the sign protected again theft?
Yes. The sign may be secured with the included security screw and Torx screwdriver. In addition, the sign is connected and restricted to your personal user account (unless you give permissions).
I'm neither technical nor handy – is Dory for me?
Absolutely! We want all aspects of Dory to be easy and fun for everyone. From the mounting, to the initial setup and future editing of your sign. In case you encounter any difficulties, reach out on the contact page, and we will do our best to resolve the issue swiftly.
How does the DualMount work?
The DualMont can be fixed either with the included adhesive tape, or 1 or more screws (also included). There is also a small buble level which can be placed in the center area for ensuring the mount is level – especially important when you use the adhesive tape.
Note that the sign can be used either horisontally or vertically, also after the mount has been secured.
For added security, use the supplied screw to secure the sign to the mount.
Can Dory be updated remotely?
Short answer: Not yet.
Longer answer: Dory is designed for ultra-low power use. It stays completely off between updates, which allows for 1,000 updates and up to 15 years of battery life.
We’re actively exploring remote update options using BLE or Wi-Fi. This would allow the sign to enter deep sleep and wake at intervals to check for updates. It’s a high priority, but no set timeline yet.
Workaround: For setups like Airbnb, you can share access with someone local (e.g. a neighbor or co-host) to update the sign manually.
Future possibility: The firmware can be updated wirelessly, so remote updates may become available for existing signs later on.
Is Dory compatible with smart home systems?
Not yet (as of June 2025), but we’re working on it.
We’re exploring ways to connect Dory to home automation platforms and provide APIs for business use. This will likely reduce battery life somewhat, but we’re designing with efficiency in mind.

What happens when the battery runs out?
First of all, this will take many years even for the most eager Dory user to experience. And visually nothing will happen, because e-paper have the rather magic ability to hold a static image without any power at all. The only consequence is that you will not be able to edit the sign before you change the battery (sold separately). The capacity is between 500–1000 updates, or 10–15 years of estimated use.
ePaper sounds a bit fragile?
The technology name is somewhat misleading as the display are not made of paper, but highly durable and robust materials. The Dory casing and tempered glass front are specified for both indoor and outdoor use (IP44 rated). Expect decades of use in either hot or cold climates.
